MISSION

The mission of the Waltham Firefighters Union I.A.F.F. Local 866, is to protect the men and women of the Waltham Fire Department who dedicate their lives to protecting you.

OVERVIEW

The Waltham Firefighters Union Local 866 provides labor representation and counsel for all members of the Waltham Fire Department, except its Chief and his general office staff.

Local 866 also services the dispatchers in the City of Waltham's Emergency 911 Call Center.

Our entire membership consists of dispatchers, firefighters/privates and fire officers (lieutenants, captains and deputy chiefs). Currently, Local 866 membership totals 170 dedicated men and women.

Local 866 is a part of the International Association of Fire Fighters (I.A.F.F.) Union and an affiliated member of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts (P.F.F.M.).

Through these organizations, our firefighters work to advance their safety, training and working concerns at the local, state, national and international levels of government.

UNION ORGANIZATION

All of our members have a voice and vote in the union and conduct their business at regularly scheduled or special meetings and elections.

To help organize their efforts, the members elect three main representatives/chair officers to provide direction and leadership for the union. The three chair officer positions are President, Vice-President and Secretary/Treasurer.

In addition to the three chair officers, the union also maintains an Executive Board that consists of representatives from each of the city's six fire stations, the Fire Prevention Office and the 911 Call Center.

To the right is a list of our union leaders.

HISTORY

The Waltham Firefighters Union formed in 1946 and became an official member of the I.A.F.F. in 1947. Our local union affiliated with the P.F.F.M. between December 1946 and September 1947. Waltham then attended the first ever state fire union convention at the Hotel Kimball, in Springfield, MA on September 10, 1947. Waltham joined thirteen other cities and towns to form the original PFFM. The other original municipalities were Attleboro, Boston, Brockton, Cambridge, Everett, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, New Bedford, Newton, Peabody, Quincy, and Springfield.

The Fire Alarm Operators were later admitted into the union. When the city combined the Police and Fire Alarm dispatch operations to form the current 911 Call Center, the local voted to continue to include all the dispatchers in the Waltham Firefighters Union.
